PS 135 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn recently hosted a special sip and paint event organized by Art Fun Studio. This free creative workshop brought together families from this vibrant community to paint the iconic Brooklyn Bridge while strengthening the bonds between parents, teachers, and students.

Serving the Sunset Park Community

Sunset Park is home to a rich and diverse immigrant community, with many families hailing from various Latin American countries. This hardworking neighborhood embodies resilience and cultural pride, but many residents carefully prioritize their spending on necessities rather than commercial recreational activities. While local Sip and Paint art workshops might be out of reach for many families, the opportunity to participate in a free, school-hosted creative event was enthusiastically embraced. The joyful turnout demonstrated how valuable accessible arts programming is for communities like Sunset Park.

The Power of Parent-Teacher Collaboration

The success of this event highlighted the critical importance of strong parent-teacher partnerships in educational settings. When parents actively engage with schools, students benefit tremendously—academically, socially, and emotionally. These collaborations create a supportive network around children, reinforcing the value of education and building a sense of belonging. At MS 135, this partnership manifested beautifully through artistic expression, creating a relaxed environment where parents, teachers, and administrators could connect beyond the traditional parent-teacher conference format.

Painting Brooklyn’s Icon Together

Participants gathered to paint the Brooklyn Bridge—a perfect subject that resonates with local pride while offering an achievable artistic challenge for beginners. As brushes dipped into paint and canvases came alive with interpretations of this famous landmark, conversation flowed and laughter filled the room. Students beamed with pride as they created alongside their parents and teachers in this unique shared experience.

Looking Forward

The event proved so successful that the school principal has requested Art Fun Studio return to host a similar workshop exclusively for teachers—recognizing the value of creative expression as a team-building activity and stress reliever for educators as well. This extension of the program demonstrates how a single community art event can spark ongoing engagement and enthusiasm throughout the school.

Art Fun Studio is proud to have facilitated this meaningful connection between PS 136 and the families it serves, proving that art can be a powerful vehicle for community building and educational partnership.
